Description

TLS as Secretary of War, signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 5.5 x 9, War Department letterhead, May 12, 1904. Letter to Eugene F. Ware, the Commissioner of Pensions, in part: “This will introduce Dr. J. R. Lincoln, of Millbury, Mass., whom I have known ever since he was a very small boy, and who is a physician of first-class standing in Millbury. Dr. Lincoln advises me that there is a vacancy on the Board of Pension Commissioners for Worcester County, and he would be very glad if he could be appointed to fill that vacancy.” In fine condition.

Eugene Fitch Ware (1841-1911) was a Civil War veteran, attorney, historian, and journalist who served in the Kansas legislature and was a delegate to two Republican National Conventions. President Roosevelt appointed him as U.S. Commissioner of Pensions, and he served from 1902 to 1905. Ware’s bureau, part of the Department of the Interior, handled veterans’ pension claims and benefits, including those from Civil War soldiers.

Jacob Reid Lincoln (1862-1925) was a respected physician who practiced allopathy medicine in the town of Millbury, Massachusetts, for more than three decades. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1888 and married Frances Willard Morse Lincoln in 1889. The Worcester County Board of Pensions helped local veterans with their applications and benefits. Dr. Lincoln probably treated many of those veterans.
