Description

TLS signed “Wm. McKinley,” one page, 5.5 x 8.5, personal letterhead, June 24, 1896. Brief letter to James M. Vernon, in full: “Please accept my grateful acknowledgment of your congratulatory message.” In fine condition, with a heavy stain to the letterhead. Accompanied by an 1897 letter sent to President McKinley by L. D. Sayres recommending the application of James V. Vernon for the governorship of Alaska. McKinley had just earned the Republican nomination for president during the Republican National Convention in St. Louis, which took place from June 16–18, 1896.

James Mercer Vernon (1849 – 1926) worked two decades as a newspaper editor around the United States before settling in the Northwest. He volunteered frequently for the Republican Party. Vernon was not appointed as Governor of the District of Alaska in 1897, but in 1898 McKinley did appoint him Postmaster of Everett, Washington, where he served for about 20 years.
