Description

Civil War-dated ANS signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, May 20, 1865, six days before the last military department of the Confederacy, the Department of the Trans-Mississippi, disbanded on May 26th, which essentially ended the Civil War. Handwritten note from General James A. Garfield, penned on the reverse of a letter addressed to him by F. E. Hutchins, who sends Garfield a quote from poet Jonathan Mitchel Sewall’s 1778 “American Epilogue to Addison's ‘Cato,’” which reads: “No pent up Utica contracts your powers, For the whole boundless continent is ours.” Hutchins writes, in part: “I suppose that the reference to ‘Utica’ is an allusion to what occurred in one of the Roman Wars…The author makes Washington the American Cato.” Garfield’s response on the reverse, addressed from the Sherman House, reads: “Respectfully forwarded to Mrs. Griggs. The writer of this is the same gentleman who found the other quotation of which I spoke.” In fine condition, with a strip of old mounting remnants along the edge.
