Description

Hand-addressed and free-franked mailing envelope, 5.5 x 3.25, addressed by Millard Fillmore to “Edward M. Samuel, Esq., Liberty, Clay Co., Missouri,” and franked in the upper right corner, “Free, M. Fillmore.” Postmarked in Buffalo, New York, on December 3rd (no date). In very good to fine condition, with scattered light soiling and staining.

Edward M. Samuel (1807-1869) was, like Fillmore, a Whig Party member. Samuel was a leading merchant, real estate investor, college board member, and banker in Liberty, who held several state and federal appointed positions. He eventually moved his family to St. Louis, because Liberty was a politically unstable area that could be dangerous for conservative Unionists.
