Description

Congressman from Pennsylvania who later served as a federal judge (1770–1842), but may be best known for writing the anthem 'Hail, Columbia' in 1798. Vellum manuscript DS, signed “Jos. Hopkinson,” one page, 24 x 16.75, April 12, 1798. Deed by which Thomas Mifflin, Jr., conveys to Michael Darby a "Lot or piece of Ground situate on the North side of Shippen Street between Crab Street and Passyunk Road in the district of Southwark and county of Philadelphia." Signed in the lower left corner in ink by Joseph Hopkinson and Matthew Adam as witnesses. In fine condition.
