Description

The 11-year-old future king: "We shall act Jane Gray this Winter. I am very sorry we have not your company in this amusement"

Rare, early ALS signed “George P,” one page, 6.75 x 9, August 21, 1749. Rare juvenile handwritten letter by the eleven-year-old Prince George, in part: "I am very glad to hear that you are safe arriv'd at Gottingen and hope to receive soon a French or a German Letter from You. I thought Your remarks on the several Places you pass'd through very amusing. We shall act Jane Gray this Winter. I am very sorry we have not your company in this amusement. Brother Edward sends his compliments." In very good to fine condition, with expert restoration of paper loss to the lower left corner, and complete professional silking to the front.

A fascinating, early letter referring to Lady Jane Grey—the great-granddaughter of Henry VII, who claimed the throne of England and Ireland for nine days in July 1553—whose story spawned numerous cultural depictions. The play that George refers to may have been The Tragedy of Lady Jane Grey by Nicholas Rowe, which premiered at Drury Lane Theatre in 1715, and was revived on a number of occasions.
