Description

"Be cautious about the Spiritualistic position in America—but don't deny it, for that brings a curse"

ALS signed “A. Conan Doyle,” one page, 5.25 x 7, 15 Buckingham Palace Mansions letterhead, November 9. Handwritten letter to a friend, in part: "I send £200—which I really can ill afford at the moment‚ but I sympathize with your position. You will, I am sure, repay me at the first possible moment." He adds an intriguing postscript, in full: "Be cautious about the Spiritualistic position in America—but don't deny it, for that brings a curse. You can well say, 'Here are facts. I leave the explanation to you.'" In fine condition, with light discoloration in the upper left corner.

For many of his later years, Doyle intensely pursued his interest in paranormal phenomena, and by the end of World War I he identified himself as a Spiritualist, believing in a spirit world and the ability to communicate with those beyond the grave. He established the specialized Psychic Bookshop in 1925, devoted entirely to the sale of spiritualistic and psychic books; he later formed a small museum in the basement, showcasing various objects relevant to ghosts and the spirit world. An interesting autograph letter alluding to his interest in spiritualism, and the reception of those ideas in the United States.
