Description

"The Vice President's position is not one where he has any right to take part in such appointments or recommendations to office"

Scarce TLS as vice president, one page, 7.75 x 10.25, The Vice President's Chamber letterhead, August 20, 1901. Letter to Andrew S. Humphrey in New York, in full: "I am in receipt of your favor of the 16th inst. in behalf of Judge Blanchard. I do not feel like volunteering in the matter of any of these federal appointments unless my advice is asked by the President. The Vice President's position is not one where he has any right to take part in such appointments or recommendations to office. You cannot think any more highly of Judge Blanchard than I do, and if my opinion of him is asked I shall most surely bear testimony to his eminent fitness for the position." Roosevelt makes several handwritten revisions to the text, writing in seven words. In fine condition, with uniform toning. Excellent content from Roosevelt exemplifying his respect for his office, and a rarity as he was vice president for a mere six months—when President McKinley died less than a month later, on September 14, 1901, Roosevelt rose to the nation's highest office.
