Rare slice of cake from the wedding of Grover Cleveland and Frances Folsom, held on June 2, 1886, in its original 6.25˝ x 2˝ x 1.5˝ box, bearing an affixed card signed in bold ink by the newlyweds, "Grover Cleveland" and "Frances Folsom." The decorative silk box, made by Tiffany & Co., is emblazoned with the date, "June 2nd, 1886," and a floral ornament. The partial piece of dense, sugary fruitcake inside, measuring approximately 1.25˝ x 2˝ x 1.25˝, is wrapped in tinfoil and the original doily. In very good to fine condition.
In the entire history of the United States, Grover Cleveland is the only president to have gotten married in the White House. The ceremony took place in the Blue Room on June 2, 1886, and saw the 49-year-old Cleveland wed his 21-year-old bride, Frances Folsom. Although the wedding was highly publicized, only close associates of the bride and groom were permitted to attend the ceremony. Supper was held in the East Room: the centerpiece was a model ship made of flowers, flying the national colors and flags bearing the initials 'CF.' Slices of wedding cake were given to the guests in individual satin boxes with cards signed by the bride and groom—this being one such example.
