Description

Remarkable oversized 'Babe Ruth Day' print, signed by subject, artist, and agent

Scarce oversized 15 x 11 print of a cartoon by Burris Jenkins, Jr., entitled "Babe Ruth Day - April 26, 1947," signed in the lower right corner in fountain pen by the subject, "Babe Ruth." Additionally signed and inscribed by Ruth's pioneering agent Christy Walsh, "Autographed for Dr. Altrock's ghost—at Yankee–Brooklyn World Series 1947, su amigo, Christy Walsh," and by the artist, "Best wishes to Gene Fowler, another World's Champ—from Burris Jenkins, Jr.". In very good to fine condition, with a light stain, some creasing in the borders, and two heavy vertical folds, none of which affects Ruth's signature.

Walsh's inscription is intriguing as it alludes to the ghostwriting syndicate that he built in the 1920s and 1930s, consisting of 30-plus journalists who published pieces under athletes' names, one of whom was Gene Fowler of the New York American. Burris Jenkins, Jr., a sports journalist and cartoonist for Hearst Publications (most notably the New York Journal-American), aptly captured the striking image of the ill Babe Ruth taking in the crowd at Yankee Stadium on final time, on 'Babe Ruth Day,' April 27, 1947. When Ruth passed away a year later, Jenkins would be named an honorary pallbearer at Ruth’s funeral.
