Description

Months before the Treaty of Paris, President McKinley authorizes “the cessation of hostilities between the United States and Spain”

DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, Executive Mansion letterhead, August 12, 1898. President McKinley directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to my Proclamation in regard to the cessation of hostilities between the United States and Spain.” Signed boldly at the conclusion by William McKinley. In fine condition, with an old paperclip impression to the top edge. Accompanied by three original copies of McKinley's 'Spain-Suspension of Hostilities' proclamation.

A fascinating document regarding the end of the Spanish–American War, which dates to a Protocol of Peace between the United States and Spain on Hostilities on August 12, 1898. Article V of the peace protocol read as follows: ‘The United States and Spain will each appoint not more than five commissioners to treat of peace, and the commissioners so appointed shall meet at Paris not later than Oct. 1, 1898, and proceed to the negotiation and conclusion of a treaty of peace, which treaty shall be subject to ratification according to the respective constitutional forms of the two countries.’ After over two months of difficult negotiations, the formal peace treaty, the Treaty of Paris, was signed in Paris on December 10, 1898, and was ratified by the United States Senate on February 6, 1899.
