This historic document pertains to the passing of the Indian Appropriations Act of 1889 and President Harrison’s subsequent issuance of ‘Proclamation 288—Opening to Settlement Certain Lands in the Indian Territory,’ which he delivered on March 23, 1889. This proclamation set into motion the great Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889, which was the first land run into the ‘Unassigned Lands’ of former Indian Territory, which had earlier been assigned to the Creek and Seminole peoples. The land run started at high noon on April 22, 1889, and featured an estimated 50,000 people lined up at the start, each one eager to gain a piece of the available two million acres. The area that was opened to settlement included all or part of the Canadian, Cleveland, Kingfisher, Logan, Oklahoma, and Payne counties of the present-day U.S. state of Oklahoma.
