Description

American soldier and politician (1737-1818) who rose to the rank of major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution but lost his command after a controversial retreat from Fort Ticonderoga. ADS signed “A. St. Clair,” one page, 7.25 x 8.75, March 7, 1772. A handwritten legal document, in part: “The Condition of this Recognizance is such that if the above named Thomas Campbell shall personally appear before his Majesty’s Justices at Bedford at the Court of General Quarter Sessions of the Peace there to be holden the fourteenth day of April next then and there to answer to such matters as shall be objected against him on his Majesty’s Behalf vouching his keeping a...House by Robert Laughlin and shall not Depart without leave of the Court then this Recognizance to be void.” Signed at the conclusion by Arthur St. Clair. In very good to fine condition, with small areas of paper loss, slightly affecting a couple words of text.
