Description

American statesman (1801–1872) who served as secretary of state in the Lincoln administration and who was severely injured in an attack that was part of the assassination conspiracy. His greatest political achievement was the purchase of Alaska from Russia, derided by contemporary skeptics as 'Seward's Folly.' ALS, one page, 4.5 x 4.5, May 4, 1860. Addressed from Washington, D.C., a brief handwritten letter to collector Harry Rogers, in full: “I give you my autograph very cheerfully, and am truly your friend.” In fine condition, with faint show-through along the left edge from an old mounting strip on the back.
