Description

Our second check signed by the telephone inventor

Exceptionally rare Union Bank of Halifax check, 8.25 x 3, filled out in another hand and signed by Alexander Graham Bell, payable to J. G. Davidson, superintendent of the Beinn Bhreagh Nursery for $20.06, April 15, 1909. In fine condition, with a short tear, and paper loss, to the upper right corner. Accompanied by a 1940 transmittal letter from Bell's daughter, Elsie May Grosvenor, who writes: “I am enclosing a cancelled check signed by my father, Alexander Graham Bell. I am glad to contribute to your collection.”

Beinn Bhreagh is the name of the former estate of Alexander Graham Bell, in Victoria County, Nova Scotia, Canada. It refers to a peninsula jutting into Cape Breton Island's scenic Bras d'Or Lake. The name Beinn Bhreagh—meaning ‘Beautiful Mountain’ in Scottish Gaelic—is thought to have been given to the peninsula by Bell, who purchased approximately 243 hectares to form the estate in the late 1880s.
