Description

President Grant appoints "a day for national thanksgiving"

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8.5 x 11, October 28, 1871. President Grant directs "the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to my Proclamation appointing a day for national thanksgiving." Crisply signed at the conclusion by President Grant. In fine condition, with some light creasing and scattered foxing.

Beginning with Abraham Lincoln in 1863, American presidents have carried on the custom of proclaiming a day of national Thanksgiving for 160 years. Although Congress and President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Thanksgiving as an official federal holiday in 1941, the annual tradition of the president proclaiming the holiday remains today.
