Description

Union general and Medal of Honor recipient (1823-1907). He was commissioned colonel of the 1st Michigan Infantry in 1861. At the First Battle of Bull Run, he was wounded and captured while in command of a brigade, remaining a prisoner for more than a year, part of the time as a hostage for Rebel privateersmen. Two carte-de-visite portraits of Willcox: a 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photograph of Willcox by C. D. Fredricks of New York, signed on the reverse in ink, "O. B. Willcox, Brvt. Maj. Genl., U.S.V."; and an unsigned 2.5 x 3.75 carte-de-visite portrait of Willcox by Brady's National Photographic Galleries, with an identification notation to the mount. In fine condition, with trimmed edges, slightly clipped corner tips, and what appears to be a rubbed-off inscription above Willcox's autograph.
