Description

American engineer, inventor, marksman, and commanding colonel (1824-1893) of the United States Volunteer Sharpshooter Regiments during the American Civil War. He was the inventor of the Berdan rifle, the Berdan centerfire primer, and other weapons and accessories. Civil War-dated partly-printed DS, signed “H. Berdan, Col.,” one page, 8 x 10, May 14, 1862. An Army of the United States "Certificate of Disability for Discharge," documenting the injury of "William J. Tompkins, a private…of the 1st Regiment of United States." The certificate is signed by an assistant surgeon, identifying "varicose veins of the leg…which quite incapacitate him from marching or sustaining the fatigue of a soldier's life." Endorsed at the conclusion by Berdan as commander of the regiment. In fine condition.
