"I am in the race to stay!"—Reagan reports on the 1976 GOP primaries

TLS signed “Ron,” two pages, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, March 26, 1976. Letter to Ted Cummings, a longtime friend and member of Reagan's 'Kitchen Cabinet.' In part: "In the midst of this hectic campaign, I wanted to take just a few moments to write to you to thank you for your past support and to give you my view of the campaign as it now stands. Let me tell you that I am just as confident of victory today as I was before the New Hampshire Primary took place. Let me explain why.

First, of course, is our stunning triumph in North Carolina! With continued dedication, this will prove to be only the first of many primary successes. In addition, almost one-third of the way through the delegate selection process, we are tied (or perhaps slightly ahead) in the delegate count.

While the news media has been focusing attention on the primaries, we have been giving the opposition a bad beating in those states which do not hold primary elections; states where the delegates are selected through a primary caucus procedure.

Ford has won a majority of the delegates in five states. Although the entire delegation selection process is not yet complete, it is apparent that we have scored major victories in six states—Alaska, Arizona, Iowa, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Washington state.

And we haven't even gotten to two of the most important primary states, Texas and California (more than 300 delegates), in which independent polls give me a solid lead. I am in the race to stay!" In fine condition, with light creasing to the upper right. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.

Ronald Reagan challenged the incumbent Gerald Ford for the Republican nomination in the 1976 presidential primaries; although Ford won, the campaign established Reagan as a serious candidate for the nation's office. His presidential aspirations would be fulfilled when he ran again in 1980.
