Description

Scarce document boldly signed by Sam Houston in his namesake city during his first term as President of the Republic of Texas

Manuscript DS, signed “Sam Houston,” one page, 7.5 x 9.25, June 28, 1838. Document issued by the "Executive Department, Texas," at the "City of Houston," in full: "Every head of Department, of Government, will require of the Bureau or Bureaus, under his control, a full and detailed account, of the business, the number of Clerks, in the respective offices, their Salaries, names, &c, and will communicate the same to the Executive, by the first of October next." Boldly and prominently signed at the conclusion by Sam Houston as the first president of Texas. In very good to fine condition, with light staining, and show-through from a small repair on the reverse.

The city of Houston was incorporated in 1837, with a population of just 1,200. It served as the capital of the Republic of Texas until 1839, when the republic relocated its capital to Austin. Sam Houston was elected as the first president of the Republic of Texas in 1836, leaving office due to term limits at the end of 1838. He would serve a second term from 1841 to 1844, and would go on to play a key role in the annexation of Texas by the United States in 1845. In 1846, he was elected to represent Texas in the United States Senate. Such early Republic of Texas documents, signed by Houston in his namesake city, are scarce and highly sought.
