Remarkable 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Gen. Robert E. Lee by Mathew Brady, signed in ink, "R. E. Lee." The mount is imprinted with Brady's copyright notice: "Entered according to Act of Congress by M. B. Brady & Co. in the year 1865 in the Clerk’s Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia." Displayed in an antique 4.5 x 6.5 frame, with old typed caption on the reverse: "This genuine Brady photo was personally autographed for Gen. Nathan B. Forrest by Gen. Lee and Gen. Forrest presented it to Col. Robert Mason, of the Athens, Ala., cadets who served under Gen. Forrest." In very good to fine condition, with light soiling and overall fading. Nathan Bedford Forrest was a Confederate general (1821-1877) who earned a reputation as the greatest cavalry officer of the Civil War. A highly desirable Brady portrait improved substantially by its interesting provenance.
