Soldier and politician (born 1637) who served as the governor of the Colony of Connecticut from 1698 until his death on November 27, 1707. Scarce manuscript DS, signed “J: Winthrop,” one page, 12.25 x 7.5, May 20, 1706. As Governor of the Connecticut Colony, Fitz-John Winthrop appoints John Coe to be “Lieutenant of the Train-band or Foot Company in the Town of Stratford...exercising your Inferiour Officers and Souldiers in the use of their Arms according to the discipline of Warr.” Signed prominently at the conclusion by Winthrop. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light foxing, and a round hole where the seal once resided.
