Confederate major general (1826-1895) who distinguished himself during the Siege of Petersburg; in his career as a civil engineer, Mahone was prominent in the building of Virginia's roads and railroads. Partly-printed DS, one page, 16 x 27, September 9, 1871. Bond of the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio Rail Road Company in the amount of $1,000, signed at the conclusion in ink by Mahone as the company's president. The bond retains 57 of its interest coupons below. In fine condition, with usual cancellation holes touching the signature.
