President Grant directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to “an Additional Agreement between the United States of America and the Empire of Japan, modifying the provisions of the Postal Convention of the 6th August 1873, and also of the Agreement of April 26th 1875 between the two countries.” Signed crisply at the conclusion by U. S. Grant. In fine condition.
This document relates to the postal convention between the United States and Japan on August 6, 1873, which resulted in a treaty that required the United States to close all American post offices in Japan, which, as a result, then instituted its own foreign mail service. The treaty was the first in which a Western nation treated Japan as an equal, and it was also the first treaty in which a Western nation agreed to relinquish one of the privileges of extraterritoriality in Japan.
