ALS as an Ohio Congressman, signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, September 30, 1871. Handwritten letter to his stenographer G. U. Rose, in full: “I have just reached home after two weeks hard campaigning. Your kind letters were awaiting me & also the French translation. I did have a very hard time with my neck for about 9 days — but I only lost five days of speaking, and am getting along well now. I shall speak every week day from now until Election, & I now hope to get to Washington, about the first week of November. Smally staid with me last night & has just left for Cleveland. All the family join in kind regards to you & yours.” In fine condition, with a rough top edge.
