Typed statement signed by U.S. District Judge Sarah T. Hughes, one page, 5.25 x 8, no date: The statement, in full: “I was at a luncheon meeting honoring President Kennedy when word was received that there had been an accident and the Governor and the President had been taken to the hospital. The luncheon broke up and on the way out I heard that he had been shot and had died. I went home and phoned my office. The United States Attorney was there and came on the line and said the Vice President was on the other line and wanted me to give him the oath of office. I got in my car, hurried to the airport and with Mrs. Kennedy on his left and Mrs. Johnson on his right he repeated the oath. I immediately left the plane.” Signed at the conclusion in ballpoint by Hughes, who adds below in her own hand: “LBJ was as tall as he appears in photos & on TV.” Matted with a photo Hughes swearing in Lyndon Johnson aboard Air Force One to an overall size of 17 x 11.
