Description

President Hayes sends "a Ceremonial Letter addressed to Queen Victoria," offering condolences on the death of her first cousin, George V of Hanover

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 7.75 x 10, July 24, 1878. President Hayes directs the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to “a Ceremonial Letter addressed to Queen Victoria.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Rutherford B. Hayes. The document is affixed inside a green folder, which also contains a period letter from the same date, which reads: “Answer to a letter of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, announcing the death at Paris, on June 12, 1878, of His Majesty King George of Hanover, Duke of Cumberland.” Interior of folder also bears a couple of affixed clippings. In fine condition, with some faint toning and soiling.

George V was the last king of Hanover (1819-1878), who reigned from November 18, 1851 to September 20, 1866. Blind from the age of 14, he was the grandson of Great Britain’s King George III and the first cousin to Britain’s Queen Victoria, and, until the birth of Victoria’s first child in 1841, he was second in the line of succession to the British throne.
