Soviet composer (1906-1975) whose fifteen symphonies occupy a place of central performance in the orchestral literature of the twentieth century. Twice-signed ALS in Cyrillic, signed “D. Shostakovich,” penned on the reverse of a 5.75 x 4 holiday-themed postal card, postmarked December 27, 1966. A brief handwritten letter to Soviet Minister of Culture Yekaterina Furtseva, in full (roughly translated): “I warmly congratulate you with New Year, and send my very best wishes.” Shostakovich incorporates his signature into his return address in the lower right corner. In fine condition, with one file hole touching the address.
Yekaterina Furtseva (1910-1974) was a prominent Soviet politician and cultural figure who held various high-ranking positions within the Communist Party and the Soviet government during the mid-20th century. She rose to prominence through her work in the Komsomol (All-Union Leninist Young Communist League) and later became a member of the Communist Party's Central Committee. Furtseva was appointed as the Minister of Culture of the Soviet Union in 1954, a position she held for nearly two decades. She played a significant role in shaping cultural policies and overseeing artistic activities, including literature, music, and the arts, during the Khrushchev Thaw.
