Description

Rare 1799 United States Army commission signed by John Adams and James McHenry—the first example we've offered!

Scarce partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 13.5 x 10, April 17, 1799. President Adams appoints Robert C. Thompson as "a first Lieutenant in the Eleventh Regiment of Infantry in the Service of the United States." Signed at the conclusion by President John Adams and countersigned by Secretary of War James McHenry, a signer of the Constitution and the namesake of Fort McHenry. Nicely matted and framed to an overall size of 16.75 x 13.25. In very good to fine condition, with light staining to the left side, and Adams' signature several shades light but completely legible.

The 11th Infantry came into existence in the Army of the United States in January 1799, with Aaron Ogden as Lieutenant Colonel Commandant. It was raised for the 'Quasi-War' with France but saw no war service, and was disbanded on June 15th, 1800. Decidedly rare in this format, this is the first Adams-McHenry military commission that we have offered.
