Description

TLS signed “Charles,” one page, 8 x 13, Highgrove House letterhead, July 21, 1999. Letter to BBC personality Jimmy Savile, in full: “I did so enjoy our time together in Glencoe. Your hospitality and thoughtfulness were enormously appreciated, as was your key involvement in making the visit to the mountain rescue headquarters and to The National Trust Centre such successes. It was lovely to meet so many nice people — I can see why you like living in that part of the world! And I loved seeing your cottage in that glorious position by the burn, not to mention its three splendid inhabitants who had taken so much trouble to transform your abode into something they thought would be more appropriate for a certain visitor…Above all, however, it was great fun to see you again and to find you appropriately and ethnically clad in order to receive what remains of the Lord of The Isles!” Charles adds the salutation and the valediction in his own hand: “My dear Jimmy” and “Yours, with affectionate best wishes.” In very fine condition.

Sir Jimmy Savile was a British television presenter and charity fundraiser who was posthumously revealed to have allegedly sexually abused hundreds of people, including children, over a period of several decades. He also notably held a relationship with Prince Charles, one formed over their shared interest in charity events. It’s purported that Savile acted as an unofficial adviser to Prince Charles, who sought his advice on a number of occasions on how the royal family ought to interact with the public and media. In 2012, following the revelations about Savile's alleged abuse, Clarence House, the official residence of Prince Charles, issued a statement saying that the Prince of Wales had ‘no knowledge’ of Savile's wrongdoing and had not been in contact with him since 1999. In spite of these allegations, Savile was praised in obituaries for his personal qualities and his work raising an estimated £40 million for charities.
