Description

American-born Loyalist military officer, landowner, merchant, and colonial official in the British Indian Department (1728-1796) who knew several Iroquoian languages and worked as an interpreter in the lucrative fur trade. During the Revolutionary War, he led the provincial regiment known as Butler's Rangers on the frontiers of New York and Pennsylvania. Scarce ALS, one page, 7.75 x 6, November 1769. Handwritten letter requesting to "let Richart Don have two pounds ten shillings which I shall repay you in a few days." Endorsed on the reverse by Richard Dunn, indicating that he received payment on November 17, 1769. In fine condition.
