Description

Princess Diana writes to disgraced BBC host Jimmy Savile about upcoming hospital work

TLS signed “With love, from, Diana,” two pages, 8 x 13, Kensington Palace letterhead, October 10, 1995. Letter to disgraced BBC TV and radio personality Jimmy Savile, in full: “I’m sorry to have been out of touch for so long but I know you have been busy and, I fear, you may just have noticed that I am still alive too! I particularly wanted you to know that I have continued my interest in mental illness and, especially, the work of the Special Hospitals. I am due to return to Broadmoor (temporarily!) on 14th November for a public engagement but, more importantly, to stay for a private tour of certain departments after the official business is over. I’m very keen to do more than just pass through as an occasional visitor, not least because I feel Alan Franey deserves maximum support in the face of a media interest which is too often negative (to put it mildly). In discussion with Alan, I hope to identify ways in which I might help foster public understanding of Broadmoor’s role. No firm details yet—but I just wanted Sir J. (who has done so much more for Broadmoor than I ever could) to hear about it from me!” Diana adds the valediction in her own hand, “Dear Jimmy.” In fine condition.

Jimmy Savile was a British television presenter and charity fundraiser who was posthumously revealed to have sexually abused hundreds of people, including children, over a period of several decades. He also notably held a relationship with Prince Charles, one formed over their shared interest in charity events. It’s purported that Savile acted as an unofficial adviser to Prince Charles, who sought his advice on a number of occasions on how the royal family ought to interact with the public and media. In 2012, following the revelations about Savile's abuse, Clarence House, the official residence of Prince Charles, issued a statement saying that the Prince of Wales had ‘no knowledge’ of Savile's wrongdoing and had not been in contact with him since 1999.
