Description

"We are now at the duet Scarpia Tosca"—Puccini writes during the Paris debut of Tosca

Significant ALS in Italian, signed “G. Puccini,” one page, 5.25 x 8.25, Theatre National de l'Opera Comique letterhead, October 13, 1903. Handwritten letter to music publisher Giulio Ricordi, penned during the French premiere of his opera Tosca. In part (translated): "I write to you from a small office during the first act (we are now at the duet Scarpia Tosca)'—My thoughts are with you my dear Mr. Giulio and my heart is full of gratitude for having put me at this point! I hope the performance is to our satisfaction." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Puccini's hand.

A desirable letter with reference to the Paris debut of one of Puccini's most famous and creative works. Puccini was delighted with the public's reception of the work in Paris, despite adverse comments from critics. The opera was subsequently premiered at venues throughout Europe, the Americas, Australia, and the Far East; by the outbreak of World War I in 1914 it had been performed in more than 50 cities worldwide.
