Description

Lear takes flight—an amusing self-portrait caricature within a good-bye letter to Lady Waldegrave

British artist and writer (1812-1898) best known for his 'nonsense' books, which feature his quirky drawings and amusing verse. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, July 31, 1877. Handwritten letter to "Lady Waldegrave," in part: "I shall trouble you with this gnoat because the chances are that I shall not see you again before I go out of England…I have to remain with my nose at the grindstone to finish one of the two large Northbook pictures, as to take it down to Stratton with as little delay as possible. After witch, & another visit to my sister, I shall go South, like the swollers." Here, he adds a fantastic self-portrait sketch of a birdlike version of himself soaring through the air. Lear continues: "So I wish you good bye, with many good wishes for a pleasant Autumn, & many thanks for much kindness. Both you & Chichester have always been very kind to me. But, unless you both come to Italy, I fear it will be a long time before I see you again, if at all." In fine condition. A superior piece that incorporates the artistic elements for which Lear is known—from the playful misspellings to the amusing sketch, this is an ideal autograph from a significant figure in British arts and letters.
