Description

Invitation from King George V for his 1911 coronation, imploring the recipient "you are not to fail"

Exceptional partly-printed DS, signed “George R. I.,” one page, 8 x 11.25, May 4, 1911. An invitation from King George V for the royal coronation of himself and his wife, Mary of Teck, which reads: “Whereas the twenty second day of June next is appointed for the Solemnity of Our Royal Coronation. These are to Will and Command you (all excuses set apart) to make your personal attendance on Us at the time abovementioned, furnished and appointed as to your Rank and Quality appertaineth, there to do and perform all such Services as shall be required and belong unto you. Whereof you are not to fail. And so We bid you most heartily farewell.” Signed neatly in the upper border in ink by the king. In fine condition, with a light paperclip impression to the left edge.

Following the death of his father, King Edward VII, in May 1910, King George V was crowned on June 22, 1911, at Westminster Abbey in London, England. After the coronation, a procession was held through the packed streets of London, with the newly crowned king and his wife, Queen Mary, riding in an ornate carriage. As the first monarch of the House of Windsor, King George V helped the British Empire reach its peak in terms of size and power and he played an important role during World War I, boosting morale among the troops and supporting the war effort on the home front. A rare royal keepsake related to a significant moment in British history.
