Description

A signed gift from President Roosevelt for "help in the fight against infantile paralysis"

Appealing engraving of Franklin D. Roosevelt consistent with the work of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, 11 x 14, calligraphically inscribed below to an executive at Paramount Pictures, “To Frank Meyer, for his help in the fight against infantile paralysis,” and signed in fountain pen as president, “Franklin D. Roosevelt.” The reverse is stamped “771017A.” Displayed within its original blue presentation folder. In fine condition, with a hint of light foxing.

Accompanied by the original White House mailing envelope addressed to “Frank Meyer, Esq., Paramount Pictures” and postmarked on July 5, 1943; a TLS from Nicholas M. Schenck, National Chairman of the National Motion Pictures Committee, and a Western Union telegram from Schenck and National Co-Chairman Harry Brandt, both confirming and thanking Meyer for his financial support for the charity; and an original March of Dimes booklet entitled ‘So They May Walk Again…A Book of Good Deeds,’ dated February 18 to 24, 1943, with an introductory message from FDR bearing a facsimile signature.

Over a decade after founding his world-renowned polio treatment center in Warm Springs, President Roosevelt established the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis in 1938 to continue his mission. Dedicated to funding vaccine research and helping patients throughout their rehabilitation process, the organization made a strong appeal to the public to get involved; quite literally adhering to singer Eddie Cantor's fundraising call to 'send in their dimes,' the American public filled the White House mail room with coin-filled birthday wishes for the President. The March of Dimes remains one of the most prominent nonprofit organizations in the United States to this day.
