Remarkable color glossy 7.25 x 9.25 photo of President John F. Kennedy and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson walking down the driveway of the White House's South Lawn prior to the prior to the ceremony for the Workmen's Compensation Commemorative Stamp on August 31, 1961, signed and inscribed in bold fountain pen to the official White House photographer, "For Cecil Stoughton, with warmest regards, John Kennedy," and in blue ballpoint, "To Cecil Stoughton, With appreciation and high regard, Lyndon B. Johnson." Handsomely mounted, matted, and framed to an overall size of 14 x 16.5. In fine condition, with a bit of smudging to the ink in Kennedy's signature.
Cecil W. Stoughton (1920-2008) served as the first Chief Official White House Photographer, assigned to cover the Kennedy administration. Stoughton's behind-the-scene pictures of John and Jacqueline and their children in their public and private lives were pivotal in shaping the public's view of the first family. He took more than 8,000 pictures of the Kennedy family, spanning the 34-month period beginning with Kennedy's inauguration and ending with his assassination. His most iconic photograph, however, is that of Lyndon B. Johnson's swearing-in on Air Force One as the stunned, blood-spattered Jackie Kennedy stands beside him.
Signed color photographs having personally belonged to Cecil Stoughtpon are rare. This photograph inscribed and signed by both President Kennedy and Vice President Johnson to Cecil Stoughton is an exceptionally rare photo and may be the only such photo to ever come to market. A rare and significant association piece, dual-signed by JFK and LBJ for their esteemed White House photographer.
