"We came, we saw and we conquered"—rare US Navy recruiting photograph signed by Ginger Rogers

Historic vintage glossy 11 x 14 photo of Ginger Rogers dancing to a sea shanty on the deck of the USS Chicago at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, beautifully signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To Rutgers Neilson—'We came, we saw and we conquered'—Thanks to you—Bestest ever—Ginger Rogers.” Includes an unsigned 14 x 11 photo of Rogers posing with seamen on the deck of the USS Chicago. Both bear "United States Navy Recruiting Bureau" stamps on the reverse. In fine condition.

Launched in 1930, the USS Chicago played an important role in the Pacific Theater during World War II. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Chicago was at sea with Task Force 12 and immediately began a five-day sweep in the Oahu-Johnston-Palmyra triangle in an effort to intercept the enemy. After surviving a midget submarine attack at Sydney Harbour and serving in battle at the Coral Sea and Savo Island in 1942, she was sunk by Japanese aerial torpedoes in the Battle of Rennell Island, in the Solomon Islands, on January 30, 1943.
