Description

Early payment receipt signed by Paul Simon for a performance with The Manor Bird Folk Song Club

Partly-printed DS, signed “P. Simon,” one page, 4.5 x 3, September 8, 1965. A payment receipt of £12 signed at the conclusion in black ballpoint by Paul Simon. The upper margin is annotated “The Manor Bird Folk Song Club,” which correlates with a performance by Simon at the Red Lion on Bridge Street in Warrington, England. Includes another payment receipt from October 6, 1965, issued to “The Waterson Family” for £20 and signed below by singer and songwriter Norma Waterson. In fine condition. Accompanied by a letter from a prior owner and by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks.

During the Northern leg of his 1965 UK tour, Paul Simon stayed with Geoff Speed at his parents' home in Widnes, England, from where Speed would drive Simon to performances or drop him at the Widnes train station, the location where some believe Simon wrote part of his song ‘Homeward Bound.’ For what it’s worth, Simon himself said that the song was inspired by Earlestown Station.
