Handwritten letter to friend and Vietnam War hero Butch Huff, in full: “First, let me apologize for my inexcusable tardiness in replying. I was off in New Zealand working on a number called ‘Brotherhood of the Rose,’ and returned in mid October with some strange virus which I am just now shaking off. Sorry to learn that you have been unwell, but I commend your attitude. My own attitudes of sarcasm or irony are usually (mistakenly) attributed to drinking. While mucking about up in ‘I’ Corps in Viet Nam they were defoliating the Michelin rubber plantations, so I was at best breathing the same air as the troops. Every time I fart, I blame it on Agent Orange, but the witnesses are skeptical—again suggesting that my social deportment is due to drinking. Alas! Mean while hang in there, and keep reminding yourself that there is a funny side to the whole experience.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original hand-addressed mailing envelope.
A member of the 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Division in Bien Hoa during the Vietnam War, Butch Huff was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the U.S. Armed Forces’ fourth highest combat award for extreme courage and leadership against hostile forces while serving with the Army in 1969-70.
