DS, one page, 3.25 x 8, December 16-17, 1863. Docketing panel cut from a furlough document, issued from the Headquarters of the 24th Michigan. In part: "This regiment has present for duty—263 men, on detached service—71, total number for duty—334, Four furlough have been granted." Signed by Col. Henry Morrow of the 24th Michigan, Col. W. W. Robinson of the 7th Wisconsin, and Brig. Gen. Lysander Cutler of the 1st Division, I Corps. In fine condition, with scattered light soiling.
The Iron Brigade initially consisted of the 2nd, 6th, and 7th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiments, the 19th Indiana, Battery B of the 4th U.S. Light Artillery, and was later joined by the 24th Michigan. The brigade fought with gallantry at Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Appomattox. At Gettysburg on July 1st, the brigade repulsed the first Confederate offensive through Herbst's Woods. Proportionately, the Iron Brigade suffered the most casualties of any brigade in the Civil War.
