Rare war-dated J. E. B. Stuart requisition document, signed nine days before the First Battle of Bull Run

Fabled Confederate general (1833-1864) best known for his consummate skill in reconnaissance and as a cavalry officer. After leading successful offensive actions during the Northern Virginia Campaign—as well as a 'late,' disastrous showing at Gettysburg, which led to a personal rebuke by Lee—Stuart was killed during the Overland Campaign at the age of 31. Rare Civil War-dated manuscript DS, signed “Approved, J.E.B. Stuart, Lt. Col. VPA, Comd'g,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, July 12, 1861. Scarce pay order document issued from "Camp Virginia," in part: "Confederate States to Samuel Henshaw, Dr., 1 Ton Hay, $6.00, I certify that the above is correct and necessary." The document is signed at the conclusion by Regimental Quartermaster John M. Lock, and approved by J. E. B. Stuart. In very good to fine condition, with a tear to the top edge (repaired with old clear tape on the back, with some show-through toning), and an address label applied to the reverse. Just nine days later, Stuart would command his cavalry in the First Battle of Bull Run. A scarce and desirable Confederate document from early in the war, signed by the South's most fabled cavalry officer.
