Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 14.5 x 17.25, April 17, April 17, 1848. President Polk appoints Francis S. K. Russell as a "First Lieutenant in the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen in the service of the United States." Signed boldly at the conclusion by James K. Polk and countersigned by Secretary of War William L. Marcy. Embossed War Office paper seal remains affixed to the upper left. In fine condition. Interested bidders would be hard-pressed to find a nicer example.
