Distinguished American-born artist (1856-1925) who spent most of his career as an expatriate in Europe. While he painted a variety of subjects in various media, his fame rests primarily on his evocative, penetrating society portraits. ALS signed “John S. Sargent,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 3.5, personal letterhead, no date. Handwritten letter to Hugh Smith, in part: "Thank you so much for lending me Arab's Dante. I have ransacked my bookshelves and cannot find Wolf's Bokhara which I promised you. I am aghast it is lost…If it turns up at any time I will send it to you." In fine condition.
