Description

American character actor (1882-1964) best remembered for his roles in the Universal Studios horror films such as Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), and The Mummy (1932). Scarce ALS signed “Uncle Van,” four pages, 5 x 8, March 18, 1962. Handwritten letter to his nephew Bill, in part: "As to the news of your Dad. Well—I also believe it is better for him not to be alone in that big house—and also that he needs companionship. And while I don't know the lady—you do—and you seem to feel it solves his problem. Of course I don't like that 'no drink—no cards—all church'—unless she can learn to be tolerant towards these 'vices'…I had a long letter from him—he sounded as if he were a little unsure but of course that is only natural I guess after such a long and happy life with your mother…I think, from what the papers said, you have been having a worse winter than we had out here & I've been wondering if that last bad coastal storm hit you at all—hope not—was a bit worried…Take care of yourselves, write when you have the time and are in the mood." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Van Sloan's own hand.
