Jewish-American painter (1881-1961) celebrated for his Cubist works on Jewish themes. ALS signed “Max,” one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, June 7, 1942. Handwritten letter to his cousin, Charles Getz, congratulating him on his marriage and writing in support of Russia against the Nazis during World War II. In part: "I was very happy to receive your letter informing me of your marriage…I know how lonesome you were. One can read the greatest books and current history but reading it not living. Life without human (and social) contact is pretty barren. I was so glad you read the excellent appreciation of my work in the 'Morning Freiheit' by Dr. Kloomok. I am told that he is one of the best Jewish writers, and his article verifies the esteem he merits…At the moment the news from Russia is not so very good, and you know how grieved I am, but in the end the Nazi bastards will be conquered, and sent to hell for all time!…They are talking about a second front while Hitler has opened four fronts! How long can Soviet Russia keep on fighting 90% of the war?" He writes the last paragraph in Yiddish (translated): "I would like to apologize for not writing in Yiddish, it takes too long, and I admit I don't know it well enough. I was in Chicago but after my lecture in the museum my whole time was taken up by receptions. I was more than glad to run back home, even one single minute was not mine." In fine condition.
