Distinguished American-born artist (1856-1925) who spent most of his career as an expatriate in Europe. While he painted a variety of subjects in various media, his fame rests primarily on his evocative, penetrating society portraits. ALS signed "John S. Sargent," three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, Tite Street letterhead, April 17, 1923. In part: "This letter is the first intimation I have had of the 'Evening Standard' writing about me at all, and I am in utter ignorance of the whole matter." In fine condition.
