Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 7.25 x 9.75, June 3, 1868. President Johnson authorizes and directs the "Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to a Full Power authorizing Mr. Geo. P. Marsh to negotiate with the Gov't of Italy upon the subject of naturalization." In very good to fine condition, with scattered foxing and a trimmed left edge. Marsh, an American lawyer and philologist, had been a member of Congress and US Minister to Turkey. From 1861 to 1882 he was Ambassador to Italy and therefore in proper position to negotiate the subject in question. Previously sold by Walter R. Benjamin Autographs, Inc., and accompanied by the noted dealer's folder and description.
