Description

"I find it absolutely necessary to remain completely anonymous in my work and, for that reason, I never permit a photograph of myself to be used"

TLS signed “H. Cartier-Bresson,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, Magnum Photos, Inc. letterhead, May 24, 1957. Letter to Jim Wiggins, in part: "I feel very honored that you should want a photograph of me for your room. It makes it doubly painful for me to tell you that I cannot do justice to your request. The truth of the matter is that I find it absolutely necessary to remain completely anonymous in my work and, for that reason, I never permit a photograph of myself to be used. I know you will understand this and forgive me for not obliging you at this time." In very fine condition.
