A flown 5.5 x 4 American flag that was carried into lunar orbit during the Apollo 14 mission. The flag is attractively matted with an engraved plaque, an embroidered mission patch, and a glossy color photo of Mitchell standing next to the American flag during a lunar EVA, signed in silver ink, “Edgar Mitchell, 6th man to walk on the moon, Apollo 14.” The items are archivally framed under Acryguard Conservation UV-blocking glass to an overall size of 15 x 19.5. In very fine condition.
The flown American flag is one of six that Mitchell donated to Claes Nobel and his Earth Aid Society with the hope of assisting in the latter’s environmental and humanitarian efforts. Provenance accompaniments include copies of letters from Nobel and Mitchell, who forwarded the flags on December 22, 1980, a printed image of the men standing next to each other in a group, a certificate of authenticity from The Space Collective, and a signed and notarized letter of provenance from Nobel’s daughter. She writes: “My father would often mention his friendship with Apollo 14 [Lunar] Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell and how Edgar gifted him with six United States flags that had been flown on the Apollo 14 mission in a bid to further my father’s work…Enclosed is one of the six abovementioned flags flown to the moon aboard Apollo 14.”
